What Are The Signs of a Stroke?

Warning Signs of a Stroke

If you or a loved one are at a high risk of developing a stroke, it is important to know the warning signs and symptoms of an impending stroke. While there is no way to prevent a stroke from happening once you notice the symptoms, you can ensure that you or your loved one gets medical attention as soon as possible. Keep reading to learn more about the warning signs of a stroke and how a Stroke Clinical Study can help with life after having a stroke.

Remember FAST

Recognizing the signs of a stroke has been broken down using the letters F.A.S.T. Use the letters in F.A.S.T. to spot a Stroke:

  • F = Face Drooping – Does one side of the face droop, or is it numb? Ask the person to smile. Is the person’s smile uneven?
  • A = Arm Weakness – Is one arm weak or numb? Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?
  • S = Speech Difficulty – Is speech slurred?
  • T = Time to call 911 – Stroke is an emergency. Every minute counts. Call 911 immediately. Note the time when any of the symptoms first appear.

Other Stroke symptoms include the sudden onset of:

  • Numbness or weakness of face, arm, or leg, especially on one side of the body
  • Confusion, trouble speaking or understanding speech
  • Trouble seeking in one or both eyes
  • Trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination
  • Severe headache with no known cause

What to Do If You Recognize Stroke Symptoms

If you recognize the above symptoms of a stroke, do not waste time. Call 911 immediately, as strokes are emergencies, and every second counts toward their survival and recovery. If possible, note the time when symptoms began and stay on the phone with 911 until help arrives.

Do not give the person aspirin or any other medication, let them go to sleep, or drive them to the hospital yourself. Calling an ambulance so they can receive professional medical care as soon as possible is of utmost importance.

Even if you’re not totally sure whether the person is having a stroke or not, call 911 anyway, even if you’re not recognizing each and every F.A.S.T. symptom. People may not get every stroke symptom, so just make the call to be safe.
